Invisalign for Teens
If your teen has crooked teeth, it can significantly impact the quality of their smile. Traditionally, metal braces are used to correct misaligned teeth. While effective, braces are very noticeable. We live in a digital world, where teens are taking pictures of themselves all of the time and sharing them on social media. The last thing your teen wants to be known for has a shiny metal smile. At Nelson R. Diers Orthodontics, we can help to correct crooked teeth without metal brackets and wires using Invisalign for teens.

The Problem with Traditional Braces
For decades, metal braces have been the only treatment available for correcting crooked teeth. This treatment consists of three basic components, brackets, bands, and wires. At the beginning of treatment, the brackets are bonded to the fronts of the teeth. The wires are anchored to the bands, which are set around the very back teeth. The wires span across the teeth and are attached to each bracket with an elastic O-ring. The wires have the responsibility of gradually moving and stabilizing your teeth.
While effective, traditional braces do have a few major disadvantages for your teen. The biggest drawback is that they are silver, and they stand out in their smile. The brackets and the wires would be the first things that are noticed when your teen smiles. In addition to how obvious they are, braces can also cause discomfort for your teen. The brackets can rub against the soft tissues in their mouth, causing sores.
What is Invisalign for Teens?
Invisalign is a treatment that involves the use of aligners to straighten teeth rather than brackets and wires. The aligners for your teen are made from digital impressions of their mouth. These impressions are displayed on a computer monitor. Using specialized software, we can design aligners that meet the specific needs of your teen. We can see every step of their treatment from beginning to end. The aligners are made up of a clear, rigid plastic that is set over their teeth. Once in place, they become invisible. No one will be able to see the aligners when your teen smiles. Unlike traditional braces, aligners are removable. However, they should only be removed when your teen eats or brushes their teeth. To provide the best results, Invisalign aligners are meant to be worn between 20 and 22 hours a day.
How Does Invisalign Work?
Invisalign treatment uses a series of aligners that are worn for two weeks at a time. Each set of aligners is slightly different from the one before it, enabling the aligners to gradually move your teeth into their proper alignment. Like the wires of traditional braces, the plastic of the aligners puts pressure on the teeth, which then puts pressure on the periodontal ligaments. This causes the ligaments to widen, loosening the teeth slightly. The aligners are then able to gently guide the teeth to where they need to be. Once your teen has achieved a perfectly aligned smile, we then provide them with a retainer to maintain the results. Depending upon the specific situation, your teen may go through anywhere from 18 to 30 sets of aligners during the course of their treatment.
