Ceramic Braces
Cincinnati, Fairfield, & West Chester, OH

A close-up of a young woman smiling and showing clear braces on her teeth, an aesthetic orthodontic solution. If you want to straighten your teeth without a mouth full of metal, Nelson R. Diers Orthodontics offers ceramic braces in Cincinnati, Fairfield, and West Chester, OH.

Ceramic braces work the same way traditional braces do, with brackets and a wire, but the brackets are tooth-colored, so they blend in and are far less noticeable from across a room.

For a lot of adults, that single difference is what finally makes treatment feel doable, and the same goes for image-conscious teens. Ceramic braces give you a fixed, dependable way to correct crowding, gaps, and bite problems while staying low-key about it. They are one branch of our full orthodontic treatment, alongside metal braces and clear aligners.

It is worth being honest up front. Ceramic braces are less visible, not invisible, and the brackets can chip or the ties can stain if they are not cared for. We will walk through the trade-offs so you can weigh them against metal braces and aligners and pick the option that fits your teeth and your life.

What Are Ceramic Braces?

A dental model featuring clear braces, displayed on a countertop in a clinic setting for orthodontic demonstration.Ceramic braces are fixed braces that use brackets made from a tooth-colored ceramic material instead of metal. A thin wire runs through the brackets and applies gentle pressure to move your teeth, exactly like metal braces, but because the brackets match your enamel, they fade into the background.

Some ceramic systems use clear or tooth-colored ties to hold the wire, and some are self-ligating, meaning the bracket holds the wire on its own without elastics. Either way, the goal is steady, predictable tooth movement that you can mostly forget you are doing. Across our Cincinnati, Fairfield, and West Chester offices, ceramic braces are a popular choice for patients who want results without announcing them.

How Ceramic Braces Compare to Other Options

The most common mix-up is between ceramic braces and clear aligners, and they are not the same thing. Invisalign uses a series of removable, see-through trays with no brackets at all, while ceramic braces are bonded to your teeth and stay put until treatment ends. Aligners come out for meals, ceramic braces do not.

Ceramic braces also differ from the Damon System we often use. Damon braces rely on a self-ligating mechanism that can shorten treatment time, and they come in both metal and clear versions. Ceramic refers to the bracket material rather than the mechanism, so a ceramic bracket can be self-ligating too. At your consultation, our orthodontist will explain which combination suits your case.

Who Ceramic Braces Are Best For

Ceramic braces are a strong fit for adults and older teens who want a less visible option but have a case that aligners cannot fully handle, or who would rather not depend on remembering to wear trays. They manage most crowding, spacing, and bite corrections well. The honest caveats are that the clear ties can pick up stains from coffee, tea, red wine, and smoking between adjustments, and ceramic brackets are a bit more brittle than metal, so they can chip under heavy force. We change the ties at each visit and choose bracket placement carefully to limit those risks.

Your Orthodontist for Ceramic Braces

Dr. Nelson R. Diers is a Board Certified Orthodontist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics who has practiced for more than 45 years. He earned his dental degree from Northwestern University and a Master of Science in Dentistry from Indiana University, where he continues to teach on the orthodontic faculty.

Brackets are something Dr. Diers knows at a level few orthodontists do. He was part of the original group of eight that helped design the Damon bracket, so he understands how bracket design, wire choice, and placement affect both comfort and results. That depth carries directly into ceramic cases, where small decisions about placement help limit chipping and keep treatment on schedule. He is also a member of the Schulman Study Group, drawn from the top 2 percent of orthodontic practices in the country. More about his background on his bio page.

What to Expect With Ceramic Braces

From the first appointment to the day the braces come off, ceramic treatment follows a clear, predictable path, and you spend most of it living your normal life between brief adjustment visits.

Consultation and Records

We start with an exam and digital imaging to map your bite and plan the move. Our orthodontist confirms that ceramic braces fit your case, then reviews the trade-offs against metal and aligners so your choice is an informed one.

Placing the Braces

At the bonding visit, we clean and prepare each tooth, then attach the tooth-colored brackets and thread the wire. The appointment usually takes one to two hours and does not require any numbing. You leave with your braces in place the same day.

Adjustments Along the Way

Every six to eight weeks, you come in for a short adjustment. We change or tighten the wire to keep your teeth moving, and we swap the clear ties so staining never gets a chance to build up. You may feel mild pressure for a day or two after each visit, which is a sign the braces are working.

Removal and Retention

When your teeth reach their planned positions, we remove the braces and polish the enamel, and retention begins. Almost everyone needs a retainer to hold the result, and because our lab is in-house, we make yours on site rather than waiting on an outside lab. Most ceramic cases run somewhere between twelve and thirty months, depending on how much correction your bite needs.

Benefits of Ceramic Braces

Close up of teeth with clear braces, an orthodontic treatment option that is aesthetic and visually minimal. The headline benefit is appearance. Tooth-colored brackets let you correct your smile without a mouthful of metal showing in every photo and conversation, which is why ceramic braces are a favorite among the working adults and self-conscious teens we treat across Cincinnati, Fairfield, and West Chester.

You also get the reliability of fixed braces. Because ceramic braces stay on your teeth, they keep working around the clock, with nothing to remember and nothing to take out. For complicated bites that aligners cannot fully manage, that steady, full-time force often produces more predictable results.

You can usually count on a few advantages over the other options:

  • A lower profile – Tooth-colored brackets are far less noticeable than metal, in photos and in person.

  • Full-time, fixed force – The braces work continuously, with no trays to wear or lose.

  • Range of cases – Ceramic braces handle crowding, spacing, and many bite issues that aligners cannot fully correct.

  • Comfort in the details – Smooth, rounded brackets and lighter modern wires keep day-to-day wear easier than older systems.

Many of the patients we treat with ceramic braces are adults, and adult orthodontics goes deeper into what correction looks like later in life.

Why Choose Our Team for Ceramic Braces

The strongest reason comes down to bracket expertise. Our orthodontist helped design the Damon bracket and has spent more than 45 years placing braces of every kind, so the small decisions that make or break a ceramic case, like where each bracket sits and how the wire is sequenced, are second nature here.

We also run our own in-house lab, which means we make retainers and appliances on site, and fit checks happen fast. And because this is a single-doctor practice, the same orthodontist plans and finishes your treatment from start to finish, across our Cincinnati, Fairfield, and West Chester offices.

We will also be honest if ceramic is not your best path. For some patients, traditional metal braces are the sturdier, more economical choice, and for others a self-ligating Damon system or aligners make more sense. Our job is to match the tool to your case, not to upsell the flashiest option.

Ceramic Braces Cost and Financing

Cost matters, and we will give you straight answers. Ceramic braces typically run a little more than metal braces, because the brackets cost more to produce, and the final number also depends on how complex your case is and how long treatment takes. After your exam, you get a clear written estimate before you decide anything.

Orthodontic insurance usually provides a lifetime maximum that applies to braces regardless of bracket type, so a ceramic case is covered the same way a metal one would be. Our front desk works with all insurance companies, and our insurance information covers the basics while we verify your specific benefits.

Cost should not be what stops you from straightening your teeth. We offer flexible payment plans, a discount for paying in full, and FSA and HSA options, with the details laid out on our finance options page. Call (513) 829-4400 for an estimate built around your treatment plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ceramic braces really less noticeable than metal braces?

Yes, clearly so. The brackets are tinted to match tooth enamel, and with clear or tooth-colored ties the whole setup blends into your smile from normal conversational distance. Up close you can still see them, and the wire is usually still metal, so it is fair to call them less visible, but not truly invisible.

Do ceramic braces stain?

The brackets themselves resist staining, but the clear elastic ties that hold the wire can pick up color from coffee, tea, red wine, curry, and smoking. Because we replace those ties at every adjustment, any discoloration is temporary and gone by your next visit. Cutting back on staining foods in the days before an appointment helps too.

Are ceramic braces more painful than metal braces?

No, the discomfort is about the same. Both move teeth with gentle wire pressure, so you can expect mild soreness for a day or two after placement and after each adjustment. An over-the-counter pain reliever and soft foods handle it for most people. The brackets we use are smooth, so they are no rougher on your cheeks than metal.

How are ceramic braces different from Invisalign?

The deciding factors are usually removability and case complexity. Invisalign is fully removable, which is great for eating and cleaning but only works while the trays are in. Ceramic braces are fixed, so they handle tougher corrections and keep working without your help. We help you weigh those trade-offs at the consultation.

How do ceramic braces compare to the Damon System?

The Damon System is defined by its self-ligating mechanism, which can shorten treatment and reduce the number of adjustment visits. Ceramic refers to the bracket material, not the mechanism, so the two are not either-or. Damon offers clear brackets, so you can sometimes get the tooth-colored look and the self-ligating benefits together. Our orthodontist will tell you whether that combination fits your case.

Can adults get ceramic braces?

Absolutely, and adults are among the most common ceramic patients we see. There is no upper age limit on moving teeth as long as your gums and bone are healthy. Many adults choose ceramic specifically because it lets them straighten their teeth at work and in photos without metal drawing attention.

How long do ceramic braces take?

A common worry is that ceramic braces are slower than metal. They are not, because they move teeth the same way. Treatment usually lands between twelve and thirty months, with simpler cases faster, and the biggest variable is how consistently you keep your adjustment visits.

Why choose Nelson R. Diers Orthodontics for ceramic braces?

It comes down to bracket experience. Our orthodontist helped design the Damon bracket and has placed braces of every type for more than 45 years, which shows up in the placement choices that keep ceramic cases comfortable and on time. Nelson R. Diers Orthodontics is a single-doctor practice with an in-house lab and three offices in Cincinnati, Fairfield, and West Chester, so the same orthodontist sees you through from start to finish.
