Children's Orthodontics
Cincinnati, Fairfield, & West Chester, OH

Happy young boy showing his braces while sitting at home, emphasizing the importance of early orthodontic intervention. If you are wondering when to bring your child in for braces or a first orthodontic check, Nelson R. Diers Orthodontics provides children’s orthodontics for families in Cincinnati, Fairfield, and West Chester, OH.

Catching a bite or spacing problem early often makes treatment simpler later, and sometimes it means avoiding more involved work down the road.

Children’s orthodontics is not about rushing every kid into braces. For many children, the first visit is simply a baseline so we can watch how the jaw and adult teeth come in. It is one part of the orthodontic care we provide for every age, with a focus on doing only what your child actually needs.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first orthodontic checkup by age 7. That does not mean treatment at 7, it means a trained eye on your child’s growth so that if something needs attention, the timing is right. If you have noticed crowding, an uneven bite, or a thumb habit, an evaluation is a good next step.

When Should My Child See an Orthodontist?

Gloved hands of an orthodontist point out components of traditional braces during an orthodontic consultation with a patient.Age 7 is the general guideline because by then your child has enough adult teeth and jaw growth for an orthodontist to spot problems that are easier to guide than to fix later. Some children come in younger when there is a clear concern, such as a crossbite or a strong thumb or finger habit, and others simply get monitored until the time is right.

At an early evaluation, our orthodontist checks for a handful of specific things:

  • Crowding or spacing that suggests there may not be room for all the adult teeth.

  • Bite problems like an underbite, crossbite, or deep bite that are easier to guide while the jaw is still growing.

  • Habits such as thumb sucking or mouth breathing that can affect how the jaw develops.

  • Lost or extra teeth, or baby teeth that are not falling out in the right order.

If everything looks on track, we simply keep an eye on things with no rush. When early action would help, we may recommend early orthodontic treatment, sometimes called interceptive treatment, which uses your child’s natural growth to create room and guide the bite before all the adult teeth are in.

Does Early Treatment Mean Braces Twice?

Not always, and that is a fair question. When a child does need early treatment, it is usually a short first phase to address a specific problem, followed later by a second phase once the adult teeth are in. For many children, though, a single round of treatment in the early teen years is all that is needed, and we are honest about which path fits your child.

Your Children’s Orthodontist

Dr. Nelson R. Diers, DDS, MSD is a board-certified orthodontist and a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics, with more than 45 years of experience guiding young smiles. More on his background in his doctor bio.

Working with children is its own skill. Our orthodontist focuses on guiding growth so that treatment works with your child’s development rather than against it, and he rarely recommends pulling permanent teeth to make room. He also helped design the original Damon bracket system, which many practices still use today.

Children do best with an orthodontist who explains things in a way that makes sense to them and to you. Our team keeps the visits friendly and low-pressure, and we will never push treatment your child does not need.

What to Expect at Your Child’s Visits

Your child’s orthodontic care moves at the pace of their growth, so the visits look a little different depending on age and what we find.

The First Evaluation

The first visit is a friendly look at how your child’s teeth and jaw are developing. We use i-CAT 3D imaging to see the bite, the airway, and the adult teeth still under the gums, which tells us far more than a quick visual check. Most of the time, the news is that there is nothing to do yet.

Growth Checkups

If your child is not ready for treatment, we place them on a growth-monitoring schedule and see them periodically. This way we catch the right moment to act, instead of starting too early or missing the window.

Early Treatment, If Needed

When early treatment makes sense, it is usually a focused first phase: a specific appliance or a short course of braces to correct one problem, like making room or guiding the jaw. Because we run our own in-house lab, we make and adjust any appliance your child needs right here.

Full Braces or Aligners Later

Most comprehensive treatment happens in the early teen years once the adult teeth are in. By then, many children need only a single straightforward phase, and we will have already guided growth in the right direction.

Benefits of Early Orthodontic Care

Ready to begin her orthodontic treatment, a young girl excitedly holds up clear aligners in one hand and a dental model with traditional braces in the other hand. The biggest advantage of starting early is options. While a child is still growing, we can guide the jaw and create room in ways that are far harder once growth is finished, which sometimes means simpler treatment later or avoiding it altogether.

Because our orthodontist guides growth rather than waiting to react, early care at our practice often reduces how much treatment a child needs as a teen. And because he rarely recommends removing permanent teeth, creating room is usually done by guiding development, not extracting.

  • Room for adult teeth – Guiding the jaw while it grows can open space, which our orthodontist favors over removing teeth.

  • Simpler treatment later – Because we guide growth early, the second phase is often shorter and easier, or never needed at all.

  • Custom appliances on site – Our in-house lab makes and adjusts your child’s appliance without long waits for an outside lab.

  • Discreet options for teens – When the time comes, Invisalign for kids and teens is available for those who would rather skip metal braces.

Every child is different, so we tailor the plan to your child’s growth and what you want for them.

Why Choose Our Practice for Your Child

Choosing an orthodontist for your child comes down to judgment: knowing when to treat, when to wait, and how to do the most good with the least intervention. At Nelson R. Diers Orthodontics, our board-certified orthodontist has spent more than 45 years developing exactly that judgment.

Two things set our approach apart for children. Our orthodontist rarely recommends removing permanent teeth, preferring to guide growth to make room, and he helped design the original Damon bracket many orthodontists rely on. Our in-house lab means your child’s appliances are made and adjusted in the same building, so a fix does not mean waiting on an outside lab.

He is also a member of the Schulman Study Group, a study group of orthodontists who meet to share clinical methods. With offices in Cincinnati, Fairfield, and West Chester, that level of care is close to home for your family.

Children’s Orthodontics Cost and Insurance

Cost matters, and we want to be straight with you about it. What treatment costs depends on what your child actually needs, from simple monitoring to a full course of braces, and we give you a clear estimate before anything starts.

Many dental plans include an orthodontic benefit, often with a lifetime maximum that applies to children. Our team helps you understand what your plan covers and files the paperwork for you, and you can review the basics under our orthodontic insurance information.

Flexible payment plans make treatment manageable across the months of care, and our financing options lay out the choices. Call us at (513) 829-4400 to talk through your child’s situation.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age should my child first see an orthodontist?

Around age 7. That surprises parents who assume orthodontics is a teenage thing, but a check at 7 is about watching growth, not putting on braces, and the visit usually ends with nothing more than a plan to monitor. We can look earlier if you have noticed a crossbite, crowding, or a lingering thumb habit.

Does my child really need early treatment, or can we wait?

Waiting is the right answer more often than parents expect. We only recommend acting early when a problem will genuinely be harder to fix once growth finishes, and otherwise we keep your child on a monitoring schedule until the teeth and jaw are ready. You can read what that early window involves on our early orthodontic treatment overview. The point is to act at the right moment, not the earliest one.

Will my child need braces twice?

Not usually. An early phase followed by a later one is recommended only when an early problem cannot wait, and our two-phase treatment overview walks through how that works. Most children need just one round of treatment in the early teen years.

Is orthodontic treatment painful for kids?

It is usually mild. Children often feel some pressure or tenderness for a day or two after braces go on or after an adjustment, and softer foods help. Today’s brackets and wires are gentler than what most parents remember, and our team shows your child simple ways to stay comfortable.

Braces or clear aligners for my teen?

Both can work, and the right choice depends on the bite and on your teen’s habits. Clear aligners are removable and nearly invisible, which teens love, but they only work if they are worn about 22 hours a day. Braces handle more complex movements and do not rely on a teen remembering to wear them, and we help your family weigh the trade-offs.

Will my child have to have teeth pulled?

Probably not. Our orthodontist rarely recommends removing permanent teeth, and for children he leans on guiding jaw growth to create room instead. Pulling teeth is a last resort here, considered only when there is truly no other way to reach a healthy result.

How long will my child’s treatment take?

It varies, but a single phase of braces or aligners usually runs about 18 to 24 months, while an early interceptive phase is often much shorter, sometimes six to twelve months. Growth-monitoring visits in between are quick. We give you a realistic timeline once we have seen your child’s X-rays.

Why choose your practice for children’s orthodontics in West Chester?

Judgment and restraint are the short answer. Our orthodontist has guided children’s growth for more than 45 years, rarely removes permanent teeth, and will tell you honestly when your child needs nothing yet. With offices in Cincinnati, Fairfield, and West Chester and an in-house lab, your child’s care, and any appliance they need, stays close to home.
