Due to the order signed by the Ohio state Department of Health, beginning at midnight on March 24th, 2020, our office will be closed except for emergencies until at least April 6th.

If we need to inform our patients of further closures mandated by State or Federal Governments, we will update here and via email. Patients may still call to be seen for emergencies but there are going to be guidelines in place for how patient is seen to limit exposure to patient and office staff. Please call 513-777-9040 for emergencies and thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation in this ever evolving matter.

From the entire office, please follow the state order and be safe out there. We are all part of the solution in this matter.

Sleep Disorders

Early Interceptive Treatment at Nelson R. Diers OrthodonticsVisiting your dentist regularly is a good idea if you would like to keep your teeth strong and healthy. With that said, did you know that there are even more reasons to visit your dentist than simply ensuring good oral health and hygiene? There are a wide variety of issues that a dentist can help diagnose and treat, and that includes some that you might not even consider. Sleep apnea, for example, is something that you can actually receive help from your dentist for. In fact, we can help treat the issue so that you can get to sleep and stay that way safely.

What is sleep apnea?

Sleep apnea is a relatively common condition where your breathing pauses as you sleep. These pauses can last anywhere from a second or two to several minutes, and they can even occur hundreds or thousands of times while you sleep. Sleep apnea is a chronic issue that can have a real impact upon your ability to sleep well. Every time that your breath pauses, you usually unconsciously pull yourself out of deep sleep in order to correct the issue. This means that instead of getting hours of deep sleep that can help restore your energy and heal your body and mind, you end up with a night’s rest that is commonly disturbed.

What are some symptom of sleep apnea?

One of the worst parts about sleep apnea is that it’s not really something you tend to discover on your own. You generally don’t realize that you are waking up because of pauses in your breathing, and sometimes you do not fully wake up at all. That means that even though you are not getting deep rest, you might also not be waking up enough to recognize that there is a tangible issue disturbing your sleep. With that in mind, you can keep an eye out for a few symptoms that might point to a potential sleep apnea issue.

Watch for changes in your energy levels or your moods. Are you frequently waking up in the morning without feeling as though you have slept at all? Do you find yourself falling into depression without any real cause that you can determine? When we miss out on large amounts of rest, we are more prone to issues like depression, which is why unexplained depression might be a symptom of sleep apnea.

Airway Treatments

Sleep apnea causes issues with breathing because your airway collapses while you sleep. Your dentist can help you find an oral sleep appliances that will help you maintain an unobstructed airway while sleeping. This is a particularly useful option because it is easy to access, is affordable, and is easy to wear. That means that there are no painful exams or investigations involved, nor does the oral appliance hurt while you wear it. You can sleep comfortably!
